A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; ÂŁ2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.

The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which runs outlets domestically and internationally.

"The first tuna signals fortune," remarked the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the annual new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past

After the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," adding, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."

This latest purchase surpasses his previous historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his own record yet again.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be served at its restaurants nationwide.

The high-energy activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a positive way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," shared one happy customer.
