Chelsea's Manager Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as His 'Toughest 48 Hours' with the Club
Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca revealed that the run-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton was "the worst 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian made a rather mysterious statement in his after-game interview even after earning a 2-0 win at home through finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points lifted Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to four fixtures.
Yet, when questioned about Gusto's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly shared his displeasure over the preceding two days at the organization.
"The way the players are eager to improve has been excellent and this is the reason why I commend them - because with a host of problems, they are performing admirably after a tricky week," he said.
"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because several people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on the specifics, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."
Injury and Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent injury and disciplinary issues, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to recognize because the work from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's success over Everton strengthened their position in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea manager.
In that period, the coach had returned with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, held a session at Cobham, attended a pre-game news conference where he seemed at ease, and engineered a win over an in-form Everton team.
It was not obvious whether any specific press stories had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something deeper from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
